This README file hopes to provide guidance for developers who need to provide
scripts to start up their product as the init state changes to multiuser mode,
with network resources exported (run level 3). Run level 3 is the default
run level. Note that the transition to run level 3 from run levels S, 0, or
1 includes a transition through run level 2. Therefore, links to scripts in
/etc/rc2.d should not be duplicated in /etc/rc3.d. Only those services which
are running in run level 3 but not in run level 2 should be started by scripts
in /etc/rc3.d.
For a general discussion of the mechanism used to invoke these scripts see
the file /etc/init.d/README.
Note that the sequencing is unstable at this time. As such, only minimal
definitions are provided. SunSoft reserves the right to change these
definitions in a minor release. However, SunSoft will make every effort
to preserve the minimal definitions presented; they were chosen in a hope
to fulfill the goal of not changing them. In the future, it is intended
that a stronger commitment will be made to these interface definitions
which will guarantee them across minor releases. It is also planned that
additional points in the sequence will be defined.
The following sequence points are defined for the transition to single user
mode:
The base system will not alter the rc2 state in the range S00 to
S09. (This is to allow an opportunity for someone to do something
for run level 3 before system supplied scripts alter the system.)
After the S25 scripts have executed, all bundled, enabled, distributed
file systems are exporting resources.
