Implementation Notes - ndbootd


The ND boot block server program must be able to open a raw
IP socket (address format AF_INET, socket type SOCK_RAW) that
listens for ND packets (protocol IPPROTO_ND, i.e. 77 decimal).
All ND packets whose IP destination address is equal to the
server machine's IP address or all zeroes should be received on
the socket.  Sun Unix 3.0 does not support this, while 3.2 does.
The fix in 3.2 involves an additional entry in the protocol
switch table (in_proto.c in the kernel) as follows:

This is the only entry with protocol IPPROTO_ND that should be
compiled into the protocol switch table, i.e. ND support should
NOT be configured into the kernel.  In 4.3BSD, no fix is needed.


The program also requires Ethernet address translation functions.
On a Sun, these are provided in ether_addr.c in the C library.
The functions needed are specified as follows:

On a Sun, struct ether_addr is defined in <netinet/if_ether.h>.
ether_ntohost() takes a 48 bit Ethernet address and yields
the corresponding host name.  The string pointed to by hostname
must be long enough to hold the host name and a null character.
(RFC 882 suggests that domain-style host names be no longer than
254 characters.)  Inversely, ether_hostton() takes a host name
and yields a 48 bit Ethernet address.

Both functions return zero upon success and non-zero upon failure.
Both functions consult the file /etc/ethers or, if available, the
Network Information Services database 'ethers' to translate between
host names and addresses.
