But it's not the stock SIMH, but @rcornwell's KA10 version which is in development.\r\n\r\nWe have tried to build TECO on this KA10 simulator, but TECO craches when started."

"body": "Looking more closely at Brad's fileset and the one from ITS.\r\n\r\nThe DATDRW directory is almost identical. There are BIN files for SCNV, PC, D, WL, and LAY. These should be executable files.\r\n\r\nOur DRAW directories doesn't have any overlap. Brad has lots of DRW and some DIP files, and ITS has build instructions for D and some scraps of source code.\r\n\r\nITS also has the WL directory with source code. Looks pretty complete."

"body": "I've managed to compile all the Macsyma sources I can find. I edited the \"ALJABR;COMPLR >\" lisp file to comment out those modules for which we don't (yet?) have source. The process completes (and the FASL and UNFASL files are created.\r\n\r\nI'm now trying to get the loader to load the FASL files and create a dumpable image. This is currently failing. It appears that one or more of the compiled FASL files are not \"good\" (loading them gives unresolved references to functions/defsets/macros). I'm steadily working through each of those, recompiling manually and trying to produce FASL files that load without error. Some of the previously-compiled files just needed to get recompiled after required macro files were recompiled and placed in the right places. I'm currently stuck on one file (MAXDMP; COMPAR FASL), that I haven't managed to get compiled such that it loads without unresolved references. Still working on it."

"body": "Apparently, in order to build Macsyma, you need a bunch of FASL files, but also the UNFASL files and the files (whatever they are) from the MAXERR; and MAXER1; directories. These are all outputs of the Macsyma compilation process. Since we don’t have all the sources, I had to grab UNFASL and those MAXERR/MAXER1 files from AI tapes — which didn’t necessarily match in version. So, while the load and dump of Macsyma worked, and I get the appropriate prompt when I start it up, and the few simple expressions I’ve tried so far result in correct answers, I have no clue what will misbehave as a result of the mix-and-match compromise."

Perhaps I’ll do that and if we find a bug in the resulting Macsyma that is resolved by replacing the compiled FASL with a later version FASL for which we have no source, we can make a conscious decision to use the FASL or try to fix the source ourselves."

"body": "When running more complicated Macsyma commands, I get errors like:\r\n\r\nFXPDL storage capacity exceeded\r\n\r\nI used the value of the fixnum PDL as specified in ALJABR;LOADER > -- so would have thought this should have been sufficient. Not sure why it isn't. I'll try again (at some point) to rebuild Macsyma with a bigger FXPDL and see if it ameliorates the issue. We might have some other issue that is causing this error regardless of the FXPDL setting."

"body": "There's the matter of Fortran carriage control characters.\r\n\r\nThe first character of a string output by WRITE, or TYPE as in this case, is interpreted as a formatting directive called carriage control. Apparently, the data to be output by SPEAK doesn't have a carriage control character, so the first character is lost.\r\n\r\nBut the input data file does seem to have a space character in front of every string, so it looks like the intent is that SPEAK should receive strings with a proper carriage control character.\r\n\r\nIt could be that the code reading the input file is at fault."

"body": "I inquried about DOE Macsyma to the maxima mailing list. I got this:\r\n\r\n> https://sourceforge.net/projects/maxima/files/Maxima/historical/ has a list of some old tarballs. Note that the files in the tarballs are actually older than the tarballs themselves. The files in maxima-5.0.tar.gz date to the late 80's and early 90's. The most recent timestamps in the 5.0 tarball date to 1994. Note that's before Bill Schelter obtained permission (1998) from DOE to distribute Macsyma under terms of the GPL.\r\n> \r\n> Maxima 5.0 presumably contains DOE Macsyma plus changes that were made by Schelter. I don't know for sure if I've ever encountered DOE Macsyma itself. But I have a vague recollection that at some point it was actually listed on a DOE website as a software download. Is that possible? Wishful thinking perhaps?"

"body": "While I can still update the source tree to build a version of Macsyma, I can't correctly handle the message files and the updating of MAXDMP;INCORE >. This file is generated using tools in the MAXTUL directory. They rely on the FASL reading logic in RLB;FASLRO 71. I cannot compile that file, and can't find a FASL for it, because it requires RLB; BITMAC, which I can't find anywhere.\r\n\r\nNow, there may be other impediments for building an updated message system, but for now, I'm going to just use the binary INCORE > file that we have -- that is what I did in building, dumping, and running the Macsyma that I have. However, it means that a) it doesn't match the actual source/FASL files we have for Macsyma (since it was built from different versions of many of the sources) and b) we can't update it in the future, if we ever update other sources."

MIT-AI only.\r\n- Imlac PDS-1. MIT-DMS only.\r\n- Evans & Sutherland LDS-1. MIT-DMS only.\r\n- ARDS.\r\n\r\nI believe the GT40 and Imlacs were connected through serial interfaces. The 340 and TVs were not. Unsure about the LDS-1, but ITS seems to have managed it similarly to the 340."

Kent Pitman wrote me:\r\n\r\n> Frobozz Magic Zork Company (there lots of references to FMxC in the original Zork game). GUE is Great Underground Empire, and it's the date that dates in Zork date from, like A.D. in the real world.\r\n"
